Promoting Interaction

As a way of enabling interaction and creating a sense of community upon the online platform, I felt a video section that displays peoples home made videos of them ‘upcycling’ rubbish into a new use would promote people into getting involved.

I’m planning on displaying these videos in a grid system similar to tiles upon the webpage, so viewers could hover over a screenshot of the video and then read the title of it and what the outcome of the video will produceHanging-mason-jar-candlesHere is an example image that would feature on E-Global’s website, demonstrating another simple and effective use of mason jars that people may not have thought of themeselves.

Photoshop Mock Ups of App and Website

As a way of visualising how the app and website will function within the animation, I decided to portray this by using several screenshots/assets of mock up displays.

Realisation of concept Ideas

As a way of promoting and making a wide audience aware of the issues of recycling I felt the best way to digitally visualise it would be to create a animation video. The video would both explore and educate viewers on the issue of waste and the benefits of recycling and also highlight what E-Global provides and hopes to achieve.

The animation will include:

  • Statistics on recycling and facts surrounding the issue
  • A run through of E-Global’s concept of an app feature that provides users with local recycling navigation alongside other services.
  • A brief introduction to E-Global’s other platform presence as a website form, and visualise in screenshots what that enables users to do.
  • A look into the future of what E-Global has to offer, such as projects and exhibitions that will emphasis the importance of recycling.

Research and Development

Our current brief for semester B is to expand upon our prior knowledge of our short assignment of R&D completed last semester, as I felt that my previous R&D topic upon interactivity within museums is already something that is in development I chose to change direction of topic and instead explore the concept of recycling.

Whilst researching into the issue of waste and recycling, I came across a statistic from http://www.recycling-guide.org.uk/facts.html that emphasis’ the fact that if the rules on recycling was made clearer they would recycle more.Man

Project Proposal

What is the intended idea / concept behind the proposed project?

Promote and further the current awareness of recycling and the issue of litter. As it is a current and global issue that can and does affect everyone, people may not be as aware of the effects and consequences that litter has on our environment and wildlife.

The output of the project will primarily be an educational product that’s available upon various platforms, including mobile devices, online and could possibly further branch out into more gps based formats. The product will comprise of educational information on how recycling and throwing away rubbish will benefit the environment and also a list of information what types of material can be recycled. It will also include a map that relies on the users current location in order to display and direct them to the nearest recycling centres and waste disposal centres. Including a kind of gratification in terms of recycling and throwing away, could be key in further promoting it, however this concept will need finer development and consideration.

Justify the idea/concept in terms of the needs for its existence:

Although the issue surrounding this project is known by many people, a lot of information is still obscure as for instance what can and can’t be recycled is still a subject people are uneducated about. And although there is a current fine if any person is seen littering, there is still the need for further promotion of throwing away rubbish as mentioned in a Guardian article a staggering ’30 million tonnes of rubbish are removed from the streets of England each year.’ (http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2009/may/19/environment-litter)

Describe the intended audience:

Although recycling is a subject many adults have some knowledge about, in many cases they are not fully aware of the colossal scale of the issue surrounding litter and the major benefits of recycling. So in this case the educational elements of the product will be aimed at a broader age bracket, ranging from children to more mature adults. Whilst the gps recycling locator is primarily aimed at an older audience, perhaps 20+. Also suitable for a younger audience is the addition of DIY videos that convert and reuse materials that would normally be thrown away without any other thought.

How will this project extend your or your team’s creative and technical skills?

In order to create an often boring, unexciting subject into an engaging and interesting one, it will be essential to encompass engaging elements within both the web presence and the UI of the app. In making this project engaging and interesting for a wide target audience, some inclusion of interactivity will encourage audiences to be more active about their current habits of recycling or littering. Creative consideration will be essential when designing the web and apps design and layout in order for it to be accessible and understandable to both a younger and older audience.

Outline how the practical work will be carried out by you / the team (division of labour) and the time-scales involved for each task:

I’ve split up the various sections of work into firstly research, experimentation/ development and then finally production. These main sections cover a large expanse of work that will include:

Section: Inclusions: Timescale:
Research
  • Researching into current educational products that cover the issue of littering and recycling.
  • Research into what is available in promoting recycling and throwing away.
  • The issue itself and how it effects and could do with improvement or more awareness.
1-3 weeks
Experimentation
  • Experimenting with aesthetics and visuals/ development of design
  • Inclusion of interactive features
4-8 weeks
Production
  • Final developments of design, layout and user interface
9-12 weeks

What other work (by animators, designers, film-makers, writers, digital media producers, etc.) is relevant to your project? (This work may either be relevant for its conceptual or technical similarity):

  • Twitter concept A digital experience: https://vimeo.com/71187136 The animation and motion of the graphics within this video are something that I plan on adapting and adopting into my future work.
  • Yahoo! Media filter animation https://vimeo.com/35307778 I liked the concept and design of this animation, alongside the movement of each slide/ stage.
